A typhoon intensity estimation technique based on scatterometer wind data is proposed in this study. The purpose of the proposed method is to eliminate the error caused by high wind speeds in the form of averaging the sea surface wind speed in the sea area where the typhoon is located. The mean of wind speed computed in a specific circular area over the sea surface,is defined as the key parameter that defines the typhoon intensity. The mean value,M,which defined as the key parameter that defines the typhoon intensity,is determined from the wind field associated with every stage of typhoon formation. The center of the specific circular area is the typhoon center, and the radius of the specific circular area is K times of the radius of maximum wind. The technique is verified by typhoon cases from the HY-2 Satellite scatterometer data. The method proposed in this study can eliminate the error caused by high wind speeds, and proved to be effective for determining typhoon intensity for cases under Severe Typhoon category,as compared with historical typhoon records. For cases where the typhoon intensity is higher than the intensity level of Severe Typhoon, the article proposes a conjecture for determining the strength based on the method proposed in this study.
