The versatile photophysical properties of lanthanide ions have inspired vigorous research activities because of the wide range of photonic applications. Besides, lanthanide ions have also become good candidates for the preparation of potential applications in data storage and processing because most of them have a large unquenched orbital angular momentum, which may bring significant anisotropy to the system. In this paper, three series of twelve lanthanide complexes have been designed and synthesized utilizing two kinds of ligands Salen type and ?-diketones, which adopt the solution diffusion method. The structures of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies, moreover, luminescent and magnetic properties were investigated. The conclusions are listed as following:1. A series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln2(salen)2(TTA)4(OAc)2, Ln = Sm(1), Eu(2), Dy(3), Yb(4)] were synthesized by reactions of H2 salen and Cd(OAc)2 with the precursor Ln(TTA)3·2H2O under the same reaction conditions. The luminescence of complex 1 exhibits characteristic luminescence of lanthanide(III) ion and the ligand. However, for complex 2, it demonstrates only characteristic luminescence of lanthanide(III) ion. Complex 4 exhibits characteristic NIR-emitting lanthanide(III) ions. Magnetic studies show complex 3 is a SMM.2. Complexes 5–8 [Ln(L)(TTA)2(OAc)2, Ln = Sm(5), Eu(6), Dy(7), Yb(8)] were synthesized by reactions of H2 L and Cd(OAc)2 with the precursor Ln(TTA)3·2H2O under the same reaction conditions. The luminescence of complex 6 demonstrates characteristic luminescence of lanthanide(III) ion. Besides, Complex 8 exhibits characteristic NIR-emitting lanthanide(III) ions.3. A series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(L)2(DBM)4(OAc)2, Ln = Eu(9), Tb(10), Dy(11), Yb(12)] were synthesized by reactions of H2 L and Cd(OAc)2 with the precursor Ln(DBM)3·2H2O under the same reaction conditions. The luminescence of complex 9 exhibits characteristic luminescence of lanthanide(III) ion and the ligand. Complex 12 exhibits characteristic NIR-emitting lanthanide(III) ions. Furthermore, magnetic studies show complex 11 is a SMM.
