Nine lanthanide complexes assemebled about three ?-diketone ligands, viz. 1,1'-(methylazanediyl)bis(4,1-phenylene)bis(4,4,4-trifluorobutane-1,3-dione) (MBDA), 1,3-bis (4-(4,4,4-trifluoro-3-oxobutanoyl)phenyl)urea (BTPU), 1,1-(phridine-3,5-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene)bis(4,4,4-trifluorobutane-1,3-dione) (PDBP) have been prepared, respectively. The three ligands have been characterized by UV, IR, 1H NMR, ESI-MS. The nine ?-diketonate-lanthanide complexes are known as Ln2(MBDA)4[Ln=Eu (1), Sm (2), Dy (3), Yb (5), Nd (6)], Dy2(MBDA)3(phen)2 (4), Ln2(BTPU)4 [Ln=Eu (7), Sm (8)] and Eu2(PDBP)4 (9). They have been characterized by UV, IR,, ESI-MS, Xrd, elemental analysis, thermalgravimetric analysis and single-crystal diffraction anaylysis etc. The complex 1-3 and 5-9 are quadruple-stranded helicates, except for 4 of a triple-stranded helicate. The successful preparation of the triple-stranded helicate is owing to the introduction of the auxiliary ligand 1,10-phenanthroline, which take the coordination site of a ligand in the case of 3 in contrast. This strategy highlights the possibility to change, alter and modify the helical structures of the ?-diketonate-lanthanide complexes. And further studies have been carried out on the luminescent property, magnetic property and stability towards the trasition metal ions in the solution.
