The wastewater containing Cu2+ mainly comes from industrial production of copper-containing smelting, processing and electroplating, etc, however, the copper-containing waste water can cause great harm to the environment.Adsorption is a kind of method to remove heavy metal ions by the adsorption of heavy mental through active surface of adsorbent.Owing to the high specific surface, well developed pore structure, high adsorption selectivity and high adsorption rate had made activated carbon became a great adsorbent to be used in waste water treatment. At present, removal of heavy metal ions by adsorption is a research hotspot. In this paper, the pretreatment of coconut shell and wood activated carbon was carried out. Then, the pretreated coconut shell and wood activated carbon were modified by strong oxidizing agent?KMnO4 and K2FeO4?.Finally,the modified activated carbon was used to adsorb copper ions.By analysising the performance of activated carbon, the optimal parameters for the modification were determined. The advantages and disadvantages between coconut shell and wood activated carbon were compared as well as KMnO4 and K2FeO4.,discusses the adsorption mechanism of activated carbon. The characterization and analysis of activated carbon was performed by the BET,SEM,FT-IR,ICP and EDS.The results indicate that coconut shell activated carbon is better than wood activated carbon after pretreatment. The optimum parameters were as follow:activated carbon was modified with KMnO4 or K2FeO4 at a concentration of 0.01 ml/L by impregnation with 1 h at 60?;K2FeO4 is a new modifier whith better performance than KMnO4;The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of modified activated carbon are easy to be produced in the pores of activated carbon.Ion exchange reaction between carboxyl or hydroxyl group and Cu2+ led to the enrichment of Cu2+at the edge of the hole.As a result, the pore volume and specific surface area of activated carbon increased after adsorption of Cu2+...
