Traditional non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS)for fabricating hollow fiber membranes(HFMs)including design and manufacture a spinneret with two concentric orifices and providing the parallel and continuous feeding of both polymer solution and bore fluid with given rates, which would limit the diversity of traditional technique to prepare HFMs.There has been considerable room for development of HFMs with small diameters because these HFMs can be used not only to fabricate more compact HFM modules but also to use for the higher efficiency separation and purification. This paper reports a direct spinning method for fabricating HFMs from polysulfone polymer solution pre-added with gas producing agent(NaBH4)using a single orifice spinneret(a stainless steel needle)by conventional NIPS cooperated with hydrogen gas generation.Polymer concentration and temperature and pH of coagulation bath influence on structure and performance of HFMs prepared by this method were investigated. When synergy between hydrogen gas generation from hydrolysis of hydrochloric acid(HC1)aqueous solution with sodium borohydride(NaBH4)and phase separation of polymer solution, resulting in preparation of HFMs with good hollow structure and highly porous.Conversely, when hydrogen gas generation rate surpasses or lags behind phase separation of polymer solution, resulting in failure of fabrication of HFMs.The highly tunable preparation of HFMs process adjusting structure and performance of polysulfone hollow fiber membrane and promising applications in dye separation.
