With the development of people's living standard, their demands for the coziness and artistic design of household environment are also on the rise. This is what makes the household spaces in cities become more concentrated, industrial and closed. Balconies, as an important component of the living space, are unique in function, colorful in patterns, and rich in the combination of its internal elements. The balcony is a special area where household environment and outdoor environment meet, and it is closely related with dwellers' satisfaction with their material and spiritual environment. In order to meet dwellers' personalized needs, modern household balcony design theories are faced with severe challenges in terms of coziness, green ecology and environment-friendliness. At present, the functional areas of balconies have not been divided clearly, so makes the functions of balconies are very disordered. All of these problems have strongly undermined the quality of living environment. In that, the design of balcony has become an important approach to ameliorating household environment, and promoting ecological development. According to statistics, relevant theoretical studies on household balcony design are few. In this paper, the author makes a research on household balcony design both theoretically and practically. The integration of natural environment protection and household space design is stressed.The paper consists of four parts. It starts with an introduction to the background and significance of household balcony space design, and a summary of relevant theories at home and abroad, on the basis of which the study is made. After a survey-making, the author divides the evolution of balconies into two periods: the ancient period and the contemporary period. Household space is defined in terms of social backgrounds, the causes of formation, construction techniques and cultural influences, and the functions and requirements of modern household balconies are also summarized. By using the methods of case study and literature study, the author explores the traditional Chinese philosophical reflections on the integrity of human and nature, Right's Falling Water Villa Design, and Le Corbusier's thoughts and uses these thoughts to analyze the features and tendencies of balconies in China as well as western countries. Then the author of this paper summarizes the design concepts on modern household balcony design. The forth chapter is the focal part of this paper, and in this part methods of induction and picture study are used to summarize the four components of balcony space design: Color, Light, Material and Construction. On the basis of the division of balcony functions, the innovative balcony space designs are made. In the context of modern design times, when making the household balcony space design, new design concepts must be integrated on the basis of natural ecological design, with the aim of creating more works which are good for the dwellers' physical and mental health.
