Microbial fuel cells(MFCs)are devices that use bacteria as the catalysts to oxidize organic and inorganic matter and generate current to achieve chemical energy recovery in wastwater.In order to improve MFC's electrochemical performance,and expand MFC's application range,in this study,synthetic wastewater,domestic sewage,brewery wastewater were used as the substrates of MFCs to investigate their effect on wastewater treatment and electricity generation,then power managenment system(PMS)was used to boost and store MFC's energy.Firstly,the effect of substrates on MFC's electrochemical performance was studied,including start-up voltage,COD removal efficient and coulombic efficiency(CE),potential of electrode,kinetic processes,power-output,then PMS used to recycle electricity generation of MFCs had achieved high power-output in interval.The results showed that:(1)Synthetic wastewater,domestic sewage,brewery wastewater could start up MFCs,and the stable voltage were 0.60V,0.56V,0.44V,respectively.Domestic sewage's voltage was nearly equivalent to it of synthetic wastewater because of higher COD removal efficient and conductance,while brewery wastewater's voltage,with lower COD removal efficient and conductance,was lower than it of synthetic wastewater(2)With COD concentrations of substrate increasing,exoelectrogen degraded more substrate to propagate and generate current,and potential of cell,anode,cathode,and Pmax in MFCs increased,so COD removal efficient and CE were improved.And the amplitude of anode potential higher than it of cathode was dominant factor of generating current.(3)The kind of substrate had effect on electrochemical reaction in MFCs.Domestic sewage with high conductance and biodegradability achieved better wastewater treatment,mass transfor process was the dominant control process;brewery wastewater with lower conductance and unbiodegradability achieved worst wastewater treatment,mass transfor process and redox reaction on the surface of electrode were the dominant control processes.(4)When PMS was applied into MFC,and Vout and Pout of MFC were 1.60-2.00V,2.56-4.00mW in termittent higher than those in continuous mode,which made MFC possible for real world applications.
