The study was conducted to investigate the nutritional value and the effect of different processing methods of “Zhang Hybrid millet” straw.Ammoniation millet straw, silage of whole plant millet, and silage of fresh millet straw removed grain were used in this study. The effects and nutritive values of processed products were evaluated by nutrients content and in vitro gas-production technique.Three experiments were conducted in the present study.(1)The effects of adding urea(3%?4%?5% and 6% of straw)and water(20%?30%?40% and 50%)to millet straw on nutrients content and in vitro gas production of ammoniated millet straw were determined. The CP of ammoniated millet straw adding 5% and 6% urea was significantly higher than that of adding 3% and 4% urea(P < 0.01).The NDF of ammoniated millet straw decreased with increasing addition urea level. The CP and structural fiber content were not affected by adding water levels(P > 0.05).The nutrients digestion and ruminal fermentation characteristics determined in vitro gas-production technique increased with increasing addition urea level.Adding 5% urea and 50% water to millet straw has optimum effects on Ammoniated millet straw.(2)The effects of two kinds of treatment(treament A: adding 2%,4%,or 6% mollasses of whole plant millet.treament B: treatment A + 1.5‰ microbial inoculum, respectively)on nutrients content and in vitro gas production of whole plant millet silage were determined. In treatment A,the CP of silage millet adding 4% mollasses was higher and the NDF was lower than those of 2% and 6% mollasses.Treatment B had similar results with treatment A.The nutrients digestion and ruminal fermentation characteristics determined in vitro gas-production technique increased by treatment A and B.Adding 4%mollasses of whole plant millet had optimum silage effects.(3)The effects of four kinds of treatment(treament A: adding 1‰,2‰,or 3‰ mollasses of fresh millet straw removed grain.treament B: adding 2%,3%,or 4% urea + 2 ‰ microbial inoculum, respectively.treament C: adding 0.5%,1%,or 2% corn flour.Treament D: treatment C + 2% urea + 2 ‰microbial inoculum, respectively)on nutrients content and in vitro gas production of silage of fresh millet straw removed grain.Using CP and NDF to evaluate the quality of silage, treatment A had best effect.Treatment A and B increased the CPD of silage of fresh millet straw removed grain.Treatment B increased(P < 0.01)significantly the NDFD of silage of fresh millet straw removed grain. The optimum proceeding of silage of fresh millet straw removed grain was treatment A,adding 1‰ microbial inoculum had best effect. In summary, according to the present study, adding 5% urea and 50% water to millet straw has optimum effects on Ammoniated millet straw, adding 4% mollasses of whole plant millet had optimum silage effects, adding 1‰ microbial inoculum had optimum effects on silage of fresh millet straw removed grain.
