Retention of fetal membranes(RFM),where the fetal placenta is not expelled within8-12 hr after calving,and it is a major reproductive disease in dairy cows.Chinese herbal medicine is a treasure of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional culture,it is highly effective and safe for treating human and animal diseases.The single Chinese herbal medicine,semen plantaginis,is a proved recipe that to cure the retained fetal membranes(RFM)in dairy cows,but the material basis of semen plantaginis for the treatment of RFM is still unknown.Therefore,this experiment is to investigate and screen the effective parts which semen plantaginis by stir-frying with wine to cure RFM in cows,and it will provide the theoretical and practical basis for the development of new drugs that to prevent and cure RFM.The semen plantaginis was extracted by systematic solvents method and separated into five parts: petroleum ether extract,dichloromethane extract,ethyl acetate extract,n-butyl alcohol extract and water extract.The cows with RFM divided into negative control group(physiological saline),positive control group(semen plantaginis by stir-frying with wine group and cattle farm's therapy group)and treatment group(petroleum ether,dichloromethane,ethyl acetate,n-butyl alcohol and water parts groups),there were five cows in each group.To evaluate the therapeutic effect that RFM were treated by different extracts and record the discharge time of fetal membranes after medication within 48 hours.In the positive control groups,the recovery rate of semen plantaginis by stir-frying with wine group was 80%,and fetal membranes were discharged within 19 h after the drug administration.The recovery rate of the cattle farm's therapy group was 40%,and the discharge time was within 24 h.The recovery rate of dichloromethane parts group was 40%,and the discharge time was within 19 h after medication.The recovery rate of ethyl acetate parts group was 60%,and the discharge time was within 30 h after medication.The recovery rate of the water parts group was 40%,and the discharge time was within 19 h recovery rate.The recovery rate of dichloromethane and ethyl acetate parts group was 80%,and fetal membranes was discharged within 36 h.The extracts of dichloromethane and ethyl acetate or their mixture were the effective parts of RFM therapy by stir-frying with wine semen plantaginisy.The results provide a basis fordeveloping new drug for the prevention and treatment RFM in dairy cows.
