As the expression tools of artists, oil painting materials and techniques has gone a long way from estabishing a new method system independent from tempera to characteristic expressions using materials. In modern times, it has formed a consciousness among artists to reflect the individual functions of painting materials in their works. Some materials have been used throught history for their high-stability,while others once gained popurility but turned out to be abandoned by artists as a result of their own drawbacks. Scientific and technology development played an imporment role in materials development. Every arts master combined their wisdom and understanding with predencessors' experience in their works, endowing them with the underlying trend of their times, thus making painting techniques keep improving. This article studies and discusses the individual function of materials on the history of oil painting materials development and technique evolution, which consists of 4 chapters :The first chapter is a summary on the origin and development of oil painting material from three aspects : origin from tempera materials, growth into an independent system and positive role of scientific and technology played in promoting new materialsThe second chapter interprets usual painting materials in detail, which are used by contempopry artists including painting props, base materials, pigments and media objects and analyses the components and properties of some materials on the market of high-quality and representativeness. The third chapter discusses about the evolution of the oil painting : select some representative artists in the history and combine their works with literature to interpret the development phases of techniques, using some techniques of great influence on Chinese artists' painting practice as illustration. The fourth chapter explores several relevant relationship existed in the generation of individual techniques. Based on former studies on predencessors' techniques and personal practice, we try to discuss the relationship between the inheritance and innovation, the materials and techniques and explore how to achieve a balance between science and personality.
