In the long history of painting development, due to various reasons, many oil paintings failto be completed. Although this painting can not represent the highest level of the painters, but also have its unique value. These works have caught the viewer's imagination like the lost behind confession and the pendent poetry because of their incompleteness, which forms a unique aesthetic experience. At the same time,the unfinished works demonstrate the viewer a certain stage in the painters' creation process, which seems to make us closer to the vision of our ancestors and contribute to studying all aspects of the drawing masters like creative ideas and painting techniques.The research on the unfinished paintings can not only be separated from the era background and individual experience of the artists, but also should study the artist's composition style and painting techniques based on the work itself, and even it should carry on research by placing the works into the history of painting and combining with its position.This paper is divided into four partsThe first chapter discusses what the unfinished painting works and sketches are and lists the research meaning of the unfinished paintings. The unfinished paintings studied in this paper refer to that due to various reasons, the painters were stuck in a certain stage in the process of creation, and failed to complete the fixed creation intention, including those designed by the artist with the feeling of "unfinished". The significance of the research mainly lies in: it helps to understand the relationship between the artists and the times as well as the painters' creative ideas, so as to have a better understanding of the creation of oil painting masters and to study master paintings through the research on the composition and techniques of the unfinished works.The second chapter introduces the unfinished work combined with the experience of the artist and the background of the times, and studies the reasons why they are not completed. The following works are selected like Tiziano Vercelli's ThePope Paul III, Alexander and Ottavio Farnese Brothers, Jacques Louis David's work Tennis Court Oath and his draft, Monet's several pieces of portrait works like In The Party; Monet's Green Lotus, Irises, and Lucian Freud's works Portrait of Francis Bacon and Sunny Morning-- Eight Legs.The third chapter is about the creative ideas and form composition studying of the unfinished works. In those excellent oil paintings, there are not only the painter's unique spiritual pursuit and character, the creative thinking and ingenious composition are also the important factors for the success of the picture. This chapter focuses on the creative ideas showed in the selected pieces of unfinished works and the common way in the composition, so as to deepen the understanding of the painter painting.The fourth chapter studies the artists' painting techniques in the unfinished works.Because of the special nature, the unfinished paintings emerge a certain stage of the creative process to the audiences, directly showing the process of applying technique when the painters were going to create. So the research can help to have a more clear understanding of the painting techniques of old-masters.
