| Hun Ping (spirit jar) are unique funerary objects found in the lower reaches of Yangzi River from East Han to West Jin dynasties. The most characteristic Hun Ping decorated with variety sculptures was unearthed primarily in Jiang Su and Zhe Jiang province. Most of them are celadon and glaze pottery, decorated with pavilions, figures, birds, animals on the top and fish, tortoise on the lower part. In the late period, Buddha figures accounted for a large proportion.This study focus on Hun Ping and people’s faith of Han and Jin dynasties, and consists of three main parts:the first chapter is about a comprehensive overview of Hun Ping in current research, the second part analyzes the evolution of Hun Ping combined with archaeological materials, the third part is about the decoration, social funeral customs and beliefs of soul to explore the spirit and social culture in Han and Jin period, in the end is a brief overview of the demise of Hun Ping.The little symbolizes a huge universe including people and soul, life and death, the past and the future. It is a good wishes to the fallen and also is a well prayer for the livings. |
