This thesis mainly analyzes and discusses Zhang Zongxiang's running script creation from three aspects of foundation,idea and practice.Zhang Zongxiang was fond of and made great efforts to pursue ancient literature.He based his running script creation on Dynasties of Tang and Jin and peeped the essence of Wang Xizhi's running script through facsimileing Li Yong's model calligraphy.Through the understanding of Wang's calligraphy style and the study of tablet of the Wei Dynasty and Han Li character,he carried forward Wang's tradition,using the esthetic implication of “abandoning the clumsiness and keeping the skills of ancestors” to defuse Li Yong's hard,clumsy and sharp anger,and using the tablet of square strokes of six dynasties and Han Li characters to make up Li Yong's weak strokes,making the inscription rubbing skillfully blend together.In addition,nourished by his profound attainments in the studies of Chinese ancient civilization,Zhang Zongxiang's noble,big-hearted,standard and implied “scholar's style” was revealed in his strokes.Zhang Zongxiang can be said as the backbone of the school of Wang Youjun and his calligraphy can be regarded as the model of modern calligraphy,conveying much information and wise ideas to current scholars who study Wang's calligraphy.In particular,the status quo that although he studied Wang Xizhi and Wang Youjun's calligraphy,he did not possess the strength of character of the two is of great reference significance.
