The Influence Of Acoustic Environment And Subjective Cognition On Peripheral Visual Perception

The present study examined the distinction of peripheral perception of people who have different cognitive styles under three kinds of background sound. Specifically, we investigated 60 graduates from Nanjing Normal University using the Vienna Test System to test their peripheral perception by 2×3×3×3 mixed experiment design.The independent variable for cognitive style (field dependent;field middle; field independence), sound environment (highway; light music; busy street noise), gender (male; female) were between-subject variables, and the edge stimulating region (medial region; middle region;lateral region) was within-subject variable. The dependent variables were the accuracy of reaction and the time of reaction.Results showed that:(1)The main effect of sound background was significant about the reaction time and the accuracy of reaction(F=9.942, p=0.000).(2)The main effect of gender was significant about the reaction time, the reaction time of male subjects was significantly lower than female subjects(F=6.094,p=0.018).The difference of the reaction time was not significant.(3)The interaction of cognitive style and stimulate position was significant about reaction time(F=3.657, p=0.034);Also the interaction of cognitive style,sound background and stimulate position was significant about reaction time (F=5.328, p=0.009);Mostly,the interaction of the four variables was significant about reaction time (F=3.870, p=0.029).Conclusions:(1)Contrast to the individual under the light musical environment,the ability of peripheral perception of the ones who are in the highway situation is better.(2)When the individual finish the peripheral perception task,there are complex relationship between the scores and the four variables. Specifically,the ability of peripheral perception of the male is better than the female.The ability of peripheral perception of field-independent person is better than field-dependent person.(3)With the angle of the edge stimulation became increasingly bigger, the ability of peripheral perception of field-independent person is promoted faster than the field-dependent person under the light musical environment.
