The study adopts the cross-sectional approach and takes as its subjects 821 seventh-graders from six high schools in Nanjing and Shanghai. Employing the questionnaire method and such research tools as psychological adaptation questionnaire, friendship quality questionnaire, and perspective taking questionnaire, the study examines the effects of urban migrant children's friendship quality and perspective taking on their psychological adaptation by comparing with those of urban children, as well as the possible mediating effects. The research results show that:(1) there is no discernible difference between urban migrant children and urban children in terms of perspective taking and psychological adaptation, but with respect to positive friendship quality (on two dimensions, Trust and Support and Affirmative Value), urban children score higher than urban migrant children. (2) In the separate prediction of psychological adaptation by friendship quality, Trust and Support of urban children and urban migrant children both have a significant negative prediction for Emotional Symptoms; conflict and betrayal both have a significant positive prediction for Emotional Symptoms, Conduct Problems, and Peer Relationship Problems, and have a significant negative prediction for Prosocial Behavior. Unlike urban children, urban migrant children's Companionship and Entertainment has a significant positive prediction for Prosocial Behavior, and Affirmative value has a significant negative prediction for Conduct Problems, Peer Relationship Problems and a significant positive prediction for Prosocial Behavior (3) In the separate prediction for psychological adaptation by perspective taking, the perspective taking of both urban children and urban migrant children have a significant negative prediction for Emotional Symptoms, Conduct Problems, Peer Relationship Problems and a significant positive prediction for prosocial behavior. (4) The combined effects of friendship quality and perspective taking on urban children's mental adaptation differ from those on urban migrant children's mental adaptation in mode. Specifically, perspective taking plays no mediating role in the process where the friendship quality of either urban children or urban migrant children exerts an impact on their psychological adaptation. Only when the perspective taking of urban migrant children influences psychological adaptation does the friendship quality play the mediating role. In practical terms, Intimate Exposure and Communication play a mediating role in the process where perspective taking influences Peer Relationship Problems; Conflict and Betrayal plays a mediating role in the process where perspective taking influences Emotional Symptoms, Conduct Problems and Hyperactivity-Inattention.
