Seal theory highly summarizes the experience and rules of seal cutting. Form discipline subordinate, it is located in Chinese classical literary theory. It has close relations with literary theory, poetics, calligraphy theory and painting theory. Researching on it has certain academic significance.Seal theory in Ming Dynasty is the heyday in the seal theory development, which influenced later generation profoundly. This paper analyzes and reviews the typical views of seal-engravers in a certain period by time sequence. In addition, referring to the development of literary theory, poetics, calligraphy theory and painting theory in that period, this paper explores their commonality and notices the impact of the economy development and thought custom in corresponding period. This paper also illustrates the historical value of the seal theory in Ming Dynasty. In addition, this paper tries to makes explanation and evaluation on the seal theory in Ming Dynasty by some related theories from perspectives of ancient theory of literature and art and aesthetics.In this paper, seal theory in Ming Dynasty is divided into early, medium and late stages. The first chapter briefly reviewed the development of seal theory before Ming Dynasty. The introduction of theoretical contribution of Mi Fu, Zhao Mengfu and Wu Yan lays a preliminary basis for research on seal theory in Ming Dynasty. The second chapter explores influence of “Sign in the heart” theory of Xu Guan and calligraphy theory in early Ming Dynasty on seal theory. The third chapter discusses the seal theories of He Zhen and Wen Peng in middle Ming Dynasty. The fourth chapter studies the seal theories of Shen Ye, Yang Shixiu, Zhu Jian and Xu Shangda in the late Ming Dynasty. In the conclusion, “the completed” and “the unfinished” seal theory in Ming Dynasty is proposed to leave some thinking space for the future research.
