In the early 19th century Egypt become the "only living part in the Ottoman empire " after westernization reform of Muhammad Ali. In the face of declining Ottoman suzerain, Egypt basically in a state of relative independence and gradually towards the way of foreign expansion. Muhammad Ali's western-style reform, meanwhile, also with its expansion drive extends to other regions, Syria is a typical representative among them.As the end of the first war between Ottoman and Egypt, the Treaty of Kutahia was signed, and the Egypt's ruling in Syria was began. During the period of Egypt ruling Syria, Egyptian rulers adopted a more open policy, and put the reforms in Egypt to Syria. In this decade, Syria has set up a centralized political system, the feudal kingdoms and decentralization system is destroyed, country established a monopoly on trade in goods. More importantly, the Egyptian rulers opened its doors to accept new things and new ideas from Europe, the Syrian people's thought had been enlightened, and the western political culture and ideology began to permeate in Syria. But at the same time, the Egyptian rulers imposed mandatory conscription and disarming which caused the local people's antipathy. And some of Egyptian ruler's advanced policies fail to put into practice because of instability.But what is undeniable is that the Egypt's ruling in Syria created a new era in the history of Syria, the Syrian society began to modernization, the Ottoman empire opened up a reform of modernization, and the Arab nationalist ideology was germinating in Syria because of Egyptian ruler's open policies and vigorously advocated. On the other hand, Egypt invasion of Syria makes the competition for the region from the European powers had become more and more intense. To a certain extent, affected the European political situation of the second half of the 19th century.
