NHK humanistic documentary have a worldwide reputation for its high quality. Besides, social documentary such as Dynamic China, Working Poor or Muen-Shakai, still leave a deep impression on audiences for the worth of mind and its aesthetic value. Among them, Muen-Shakai is one of the most representative works in recent years, which was produced by NHK Special from 2010 to 2011. This documentary brings out a new concept called "Muen-Shakai" under the enlargement of "Muensha", and analyses its cause, effect and the coping strategy through three episodes. Under the influence of this work, the phrase "Muen-Shakai" becomes one of Japan’s Top 10 catchwords the same year, draws the attention of scholars to this social problem. In all, Muen-Shakai is one of the most representative social documentaries of NHK whether from the perspective of conception or the communicating effect. This thesis will base on Muen-Shakai, which got Kikuchikan Prize and arouse extensive discussion, to give an analysis from the point of narrative and the theory about in-depth report. The research framework as follows:As an introduction, the first chapter is mainly about the research background, the meaning and the research subject, reviews the research status related to documentary narrative and so on, gives a sketch of concept on narrative. Chapter Two carries out a study at the levels of text. Based on the main idea of Muen-Shakai, this section makes a comprehensive analysis of theme, character and the storyline of this documentary. Chapter Three and Four make a study at the levels of discourse, including the research on the narrative perspective, narrator him/herself, narrative discourse such as forms, the camera or sound language which also existed as a discourse. Also we identify the function of narrator both from the pragmatic side and cultural side. Chapter Five discusses the narration tactics of Muen-Shakai, which may be instructive to the development of television documentary in our nation. This thesis sets Muen-Shakai as not only a social documentary but a kind of in-depth report. On the one hand, based on the motive "Muen", this theme is mixed successional and overlapping, which forms the levels of text accompanied with plot structure and character image of "Muensha"; meanwhile, the levels of discourse is consisted of narrative perspective, narrative discourse such as forms, the camera language and so on. On other hand, as a television program which reflects the social reality, Muen-Shakai also seems like an in-depth report, which makes good use of the specific events and truth to embody a powerful persuasiveness. In addition, traditional values and thoughts of the time are also dissolved into Muen-Shakai aiming to make the work more attractive.Muen-Shakai discusses a social reality with full of humanistic care, remains a more aware of potential problems and enhances the sense of responsibility. This spirit of bold challenging, exploring and truth pursuing reflects the ideal state on news of NHK Special and NHK TV Station. According to the analyses of Muen-Shakai in terms of narrative, as well as giving enlightenment to our similar type of TV program, we hope that not only the independent film, but the television documentary or newspaper could return to the long journey of social developing and fulfill the deep reflection to our human-beings society. We should naturally care, understand and love each other even though we may speak into the air.
