British middle class got a rapid expansion after the middle of the nineteenth Century.Meantimes,the middle class had gradually broken through the limitations of the Evangelicalism and advocated rational recreations.With the support of the middle class,the leisure activities of the British people had developed in the direction of civilization,standardization and organization.The Illustrated London News was founded in 1842.It was the world's first Illustrated news paper,and it was also a newspaper for the middle class.It was not only reported political events,but also contained a large number of recreational activities,such as drama,music,books,exhibitions,sports and so on,provided a vivid picture of the history of victorian era.This paper aims to explore the British middle class entertainment and leisure concept through The Illustrated London News in the middle of victoran era.This paper is divided into three parts: the introduction,three chapters,and the conclusion.The introduction mainly discuss the significance of the study of the British middle class entertainment and leisure concept in the middle of the victotian era.Besides it also gives an account of the research status in related fields at home and abroad,describes the main research methods that the author uses,and does a Brief Introduction of the content of the framework.The body text consists of three chapters.The first chapter discusses the transformation of Britain's economy,technology and politics in the middle of Vitoria.The growth of the middle class in the process of development.The history of The Illustrated London News.The second chapter expounded respectively the middle class' s daily entertainment,outdoor entertainment,Ornamental activities and club activitiies.The third chapter mainly discusses the inner word of the middle class about recreations and leisure.In the conclusion part,the author makes an overview of the transformation of the concept of leisure and entertainment in the history of England and the west,and highlights the important role played by the British middle class in the transformation of the British people's leisure concept in the middle of the nineteenth Century.
