A Study Of Hans Baldon's The Death And The Girl (1519)

During the period of Germany renaissance,Durer stands out.As the student of Durer,Hans Baldung was influenced by him a lot,while Baldung developed his own style but got less attention.During 1510 till 1520,Baldung painted 5 Death and Maiden,of which the 1519 version is the most excellent one.This version is a little erotic,in which the relation of Death and Maiden is very interesting and attracts our attention.This thesis tries to explore the source of the schematic,trading back to the Dance the Death in the middle ages,and looking for the timeline of the changing relation of Death and Maiden.Besides,based on the research background,to explore the deep reason and to look at the identity of maiden with a new perspective,which leads to the maiden is the true death.Then compare the different Death and Maiden by Baldung and Niclaus Manuel.This thesis starts from the sexual relation of Death and Maiden and discuss the painting in details,trying to project something bigger and higher,for example,the human,the nature,and the society.
