Richard de Bury is considered the greatest bibliophile of the Middle Ages.Philobiblon is the only work of Bury, its theme is what the ancients' books should be learned and how to use the classical knowledge learned.Depend on this work,my thesis would spy on the absorption of classical culture of the English intelligentsia in the first half of the 14 th Century. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is a general narrative to the ideological culture of England in the first half of the 14 th Century, and puts Bury and his Philobiblon in this background. The second chapter analyzes the classical writers and works mentioned by Bury, which could expose that Bury is think highly of classical cultural education and his understanding of classical works. The third chapter explores Burley's absorption and use of classical culture. He believes that,on the basis of learning classical culture, the people move to the stage of creation and create a culture that marks its time.He discusses the concrete paths of studying classical culture—from outward appearance to inner essence. And he emphasizes to apply the classical knowledge to the pursuit of good deeds, with the reason to suppress the war and evil deeds,so as to achieve the ultimate goal of learning classical culture which is to know the good and do the good. |
