The definition of polysemy is one lexical form has two or more related meanings. As a universal phenomenon of natural language, polysemy had always been one of the important research subjects in cognitive linguistics.Cognitive linguistics starts out with the cognitive procedure of human,it advocates that the researches of language should be based on human experiences and perceptions of the objective world, and should analyze the relationship between the related meanings by using the theories such as prototype and category, image schema, metonymy and metaphor, which has opened up a new viewpoint for the semantic study. The first section of the introduction in this thesis is going to provide a brief introduction of the previous researches about cognitive linguistics and polysemous verb, then elaborate the purpose and the significance of this thesis in the second section of the introduction. There will be a discourse on the theoretical foundation--the theories of category and prototype, image schema, metaphor and metonymy--for the research of the Japanese polysemous verb "waru",and illustrate these theories by using the example sentences of "waru" in the first chapter. In the second chapter the sememe of"warus" will be sorted according to several authoritative dictionaries firstly so that the prototypical meaning and the semantic category of "waru" can be confirmed, and then the semantic construction network of "warn" will be built based on the semantic explanation of the cognate verbs "waru" and "wareru".The third chapter is the comparative analysis of "waru" and near-synonyms "kiru" "saku" "yaburu",the semantic differences and similarities will be clearly put forward through the comparisons for these three pairs of near-synonyms.There will be a comprehensive analysis of the usage of "waru" when it is used in the former and latter morpheme in compound verbs separately in the forth chapter in order to illustrate the function of"waru" in compound verbs.
