A Comparative Study On The English Translation Of The Functional Terminology Of "hepatic And Polyp"

Objective:Chinese materia medica actions are the experiential summary of the clinical medication.The quality of English translation of the action terms has an important impact on the international inheritance,development and promotion of the Chinese materia medica.But there are still many problems on the English translation of the terms,and the macro-research of this area is almost blank.So in this study,the terms related to "Pinggan xifeng" were used as the research objects,and the connotation of related action terms and its English translation were systematically studied and discussed.By exploring the connotations of the action terms,under the guidance of the related translation theory,the comparative study of the English translation was carried out to explore the translation rules and techniques of the Chinese materia medica action terms under the guidance of the translation theory,so as to provide new ideas and methods for the practice of English translation on the action terms of Chinese materia medica,and to promote the development of academic level of Chinese translation on Chinese materia medica action terms.Methods:1.Summarizing the current research status of action terms related to "pinggan xifeng"The content and development of the English translation of Chinese materia medica were clarified from the origin and the historical translation stages of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)translation.Chinese materia medica action,as the core relevant knowledge of Chinese materia medica,has come into a new stage of development with the macro TCM English translation.But English translation of action terms is rarely studied,the systematic research is insufficient,and the current studies exists a lot of problems.2.Exploring a guiding translation theoryOn the basis of reviewing the practice of TCM translation and TCM translation theory,this paper found out the combination between TCM translation and translation theory:metaphor cognition and relevance.Through the analysis on TCM language and logical characteristics and the guiding advantages of Relevant Theory,the related translation theory——Relevant Translation Theory was chosen to guide the translation of action terms of Chinese materia medica,and the related translation theory was explored in order to guide the translation for TCM.3.Exploring the Chinese connotation of action terms related to "pinggan xifeng"First of all,through the synonyms of the phrase "pinggan" with "zhengan" and its related phrase "rougan",as well as the synonyms of the phrase "xifeng" with its allo-graphic synonym,all the action terms related to the mentioned five phrases were screened out;and then,from the etymology of Chinese characters,according to the property theory of Chinese materia medica,combined with clinical medication,the property-based connotation of each action term and the logical relation within the phrases were determined.4.Comparative study of the English translation of the action terms related to "pinggan xifeng"The eight authoritative versions of English translation books and dictionaries were selected,and the eight English translation versions of the action terms related to "pinggan xifeng" were sorted out.Through comparison,the main translation problems of the eight versions were listed as followed:logical relationship between phrases was not clear,the English expression could not accurately express the connotations of the action terms,the selected English words were not accurate enough,and the biggest problem was that the individualized English expression was not considered according to the property theory of Chinese materia medica.The key to solve these problems was to explore the connotations of Chinese materia medica action terms under the guidance of the Relevant Translation Theory.ResultsThrough the screening,summarizing,and comparing of the connotation of the English translation of the action terms related to "pinggan xifeng",under the guidance of the Relevant Translation Theory,the eight English versions of the translation were compared,and the results were that there were some problems in both the Chinese expression and its English translation.For the main problems in Chinese expression were as followed:firstly,the same connotation corresponding to multiple terms;secondly,the form of writing was not standardized;thirdly,the term indicates ambiguously;fourthly,the two phrases in some action terms were combined arbitrarily;fifthly,the logical relationship within the term was not clear.The causes of these existing problems may be as followed:Chinese language was broad and profound showing diversity;the interpretation of Chinese materia medica action terms was different in different historical stages;Chinese language had metaphorical characteristics.For the main problems in the English translation were as followed:many English translation versions without agreement,non-uniform translation strategies,inferior back-translation,and superficial translation replacing the connotation translation.The causes of these existing problems may be as followed:there was no uniform standard for TCM translation;the logic of TCM language was not clear,the understanding of TCM of different translators was different;translators' professional accomplishment had a great impact on translation;and TCM translation theory has not yet established.In order to meet the needs of the development of English translation in the new stage,the English translation of TCM needs to be traced back and forth,and the Chinese connotation should be analyzed in detail combining the properties of Chines materia medica.Only the Chinese connotation is clarified,can the terms be translated into English well according to the appropriate translation theory.For example,for the action terms related to "pinggan xifeng",the translation idea was as followed:firstly,from the etymological point of view,combined with the etiology,pathogenesis and indications,the connotation of the action terms was explored in detail;secondly,according to the meaning and nature of the main phrases in the term,the logical relationship between phrases was deduced;thirdly,combined with specific context,such as properties of Chinese materia medica and mechanism of actions,the English words were determined;finally,under the guidance of the Relevance Theory,from the cognitive point of view,the appropriate translation strategies were selected.Conclusion:To translate the Chinese materia medica action terms well,firstly,the TCM language and logical characteristics should be clarified;secondly,for the contention of a hundred schools of thought,we should find out the root to the question to determine the Chinese connotation of the action terms,combined with modern clinical research,according to the academic thought of "combination of properties with actions";thirdly,checking the correspondence between the Chinese and English words,from the interpretation of the English language,make sure the language of the largest correspondence is achieved;finally,combined with the Relevance Theory,solve the contradictory problems in the translation,and translate the terms according to the proper translation strategies.This study is aimed at the translation of the action terms related to "pinggan xifeng",so there may be inevitable problems of specificity for the specific research ideas and methods,but there may be a way to open the door to TCM translation.In short,we hope that this study will contribute to the great cause of TCM translation.
