Two goals in this article.Firstly, talks about carving tools and techniques in Greek Classical times.Secondly, introduces about the investigator in this field, precisely,it is their effort that make us obtained the knowledge.I will use three chapters to organize these materials. The first chapter studies about the marble, provenience and quarry.Marble itself has important influence on the choice of form.Investigation to the source can promote the cohort analysis of the ancient Greek sculptures.Masons will do some preliminary work in the quarry and sculptors sometimes set the studios around the quarry. The second chapter investigates the engraving tools, concerning on the most controversial tools in modern academy history——point, chisel, flat chisel, rounded chisel, drove, drill, running drill, rasps and abrasives. The focus of the debate is whether the tools accelerate the sculpture style changes. The third chapter discusses the carving steps of Greek Classical sculptures.Greek sculptors, the same as their modern counterparts, the first step of carving is to make the isometric preliminary model, and then transfer model to a marble—use plumb line measurement and caliper measurement. This section also talks about the bas-relief carving method, the color of the sculpture and ganosis.Sculptors’ creation restricted by sculpture materials.Their carving purpose and intention also change with materials and methods.Specific era’s special materials and methods are bound to affect carving style and visual effect.
