Image presentation in the movie is discussed in this paper, which is divided into three chapters.Chapter I discusses and summarizes the established related theories from four perspectives, photograph ontology mentioned in “Ontology of Photography and Video” written by Bazin, the comprehension of “still life” in “Nature of Film” written by Krakauer,“shape of things” mentioned in the chapter of “creative camera” of “”Film Aesthetics” written by Balazs as well as objective image in oriental aesthetics. It thus indicates that discourse narration and image presentation constitutes the important elements of film,in which image presentation is exactly the connotation of picturization as said by Krakauer, which follows ontology of photography. The camera not only records the objects and events we don't see or neglected by us but also reveals the deep connotations in the world we are familiar with.In the movie, image mainly indicates such visual elements including prop, setting, environment and astronomical phenomena as well as the deep connotations endowed by them. Those “vivid” images, different from ordinary ones, are inevitably associated with figures and plots and even the turning points of film narration sometimes, having pivotal role in characterization and story development. To be mentionable, when Krakauer proposes that the actor is a part of environment and his body doesn't play a role as it is.At this time, the function of actor becomes “one of images”.The relationship between image and actor seems to be “self state” and “selfless state” as mentioned by Wang Guowei.Chapter II,the image of “rosebud” in “Citizen Kane” is a good example of image. It represents the corporeal reality-rose pattern on sleigh in the childhood and also reveals the significance behind-the childhood deprived by Kane.In the meantime, through detailed inquiry about “rosebud”,the audiences seem to understand the deeper connotations in spiritual level: “rosebud” is what lost by Kane? It represents such images as “aspirations never owned”,“lost good” and “happiness only existing in memory”.Through analysis of sections where 34 actor's lines of “rosebud” emerge in the film, the techniques such as technique of expression, snow image and crystal ball to explain the role of image presentation in the movie.Chapter III summaries and generalizes that some images in movie are “dead”.They are not inevitably associated with the actions and emotions of figures. They are also the indispensable constituent part of film. Some images are “alive”.They usually don't not only play the roles of visual elements including prop, setting, environment and astronomical phenomena but also contain the deeper connotations and metaphorize certain images so that they not only convey information to the audiences but also express viewpoints. As a result, the audiences have resonance and their emotion is stimulated.
