The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove(with the addition of an anachronistic or immortal Rong Qiqi)(“Bamboo”)is one of the most representative art work(molded tomb bricks)in Wei-Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties,which was revealed at Gongshan Tomb near Nanjing.It has became the eternal theme in Chinese art in the later thousand years,also.On the one hand,Bamboo is a symbol of the Chinese scholars.On the other hand,it was the unique cultural phenomenon which only can be found in Wei-Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties.Meanwhile,the carving lines of Bamboo are similar to Chinese Painting and Sculpture,which has the same expressive forms as Chinese Painting and Calligraphy.This can be as the powerful evidence of the principles of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting in that age.Hence,the research of this brick painting is a chance to explore the secret of the tradition of ancient Chinese art.This dissertation focus on demonstrating and analysing the background,aesthetic theories and methods of this brick painting and aims to clean the ideas and methods of Chinese art creation.The whole process contains the comparison and analysation among the Painting,Calligraphy and Sculpture and attempts to prove the uniformity between the the creation of Bamboo and the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting in the same period.Revealing the aesthetic secret of this brick painting through the further studying of this tomb bricks,which influenced the theories of Chinese art until now.The very first step of this research process is to deduce the aesthetic tendency from the background of this brick.After that,to prove the theories of this work through using the theories of the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting in the same age.The last but not least,to demonstrate the conformity of these aesthetic theories from practical aspect.This conformity not only encourages us to know well the spirits of that age,but also can be as the essential reference for contemporary art practitioners.
