| The Zhucheng Faction of Ancient Qin(a type of Chinese Zither with 7 strings,it will be referred as “ZFAQ” in this abstract)is one of the most important factions of modern Chinese string instruments and it has a crucial position in the Chinese string instrument industry as the only Ancient Qin fraction from the northern part of China.ZFAQ first came about in the beginning of 19 th century and developed in the second half of the same century.It has more than 200 years of history.This faction is named as Zhucheng is because it was first formed in Zhucheng area in Shandong,China.Through the hard work of generations of players,ZFAQ is widely practiced all over China nowadays.There are 2 sub fractions developed during this process,one is commonly practiced in the North especially in Shandong,and the other one is commonly practiced in the South especially in Jiangsu.During its development,ZFAQ has been extending its influence all over China even abroad.In the past 200 years,ZFAQ has been passed on via 3 different ways of inheritance,which played essential roles in the development of ZFAQ.The 2 sub fractions of ZFAQ are formed at the beginning of the ZFAQ,one's originator is Wang Jifu from the North,and the other one was brought by Wang Yanqing to the South.These 2 sub factions have integrated to innovate and grow under the ZFAQ umbrella.ZFAQ's early development was more active in the Zhucheng local area.From the Qin players Wang Xinkui and Wang Xiunian,ZFAQ began to be passed on to students outside the Wang family.Their pupils are from different parts of China,especially those of Wang Xinkui.From then on,ZFAQ was spread across China.In the early 20 th century,ZFAQ has been learned country-wide.With the establishment of a Qin Club in Jinan,the center for teaching has been moved from Zhucheng to Jinan.With Wang Yanqing being hired as a professor at the Nanking National Higher Education School,the teaching center for ZFAQ in the south was slowly moved to Nanking and was developed fast there.After Wang Yanqing passed away,his 2 students Xu Lisun and Shao Dasu established the “Mei An Qin Club” in Nantong,Jiangsu,which then made the center of teaching to be shifted to Nantong.After the effort of 3 generations of the Wang Family,ZFAQ has sprouted in many parts of Shandong,especially after the establishment of “De Yin Qin Club” by Wang Xinkui in Jinan,Chinese Ancient Qin culture has deeply rooted in Jinan.Many different players of ZFAQ are very active in the Chinese string instrument industry and have started their own clubs to communicate and cultivate the Qin culture.Different opinions have been expressed among those players and been practiced through their teaching activities to make the ZFAQ a more vibrant faction of the Qin industry.In 2008,ZFAQ was selected as one of the National and United Nation's World Intangible Cultural Heritage projects.In recent years,with the growing importance of the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage by China,Shandong Provincial Government has put great efforts in the preservation and development of ZFAQ.Jinan,as the capital of Shandong Province,has also contributed greatly in such process.ZFAQ is thriving in a cultivating environment in China and has shown the world its artistic beauty and charisma.This thesis studies the artists and players in the Zhucheng Faction of Ancient Qin,combs through the inheritance context of the ZFAQ via more detailed research in 3 main areas. |
