Nietzsche's Study Of Naturalism And Normative Thinking

The main aim of this paper is to analyze and evaluate Nietzsche’s naturalism and normativity in the framework of naturalism. As we know, Naturalist has been a relatively common evaluation of Nietzsche. However, Nietzsche was widely regarded as a debunker of central regions of normative thought, rather than someone to whom positive normative views could be ascribed. Nevertheless, the last thirty years have witnessed several,transformations in Nietzsche studies. One is Nietzsche’s growing reception within Anglo-American philosophical circles, and a second concerns an increased sensitivity to the naturalistic presuppositions and ambitions informing much of Nietzsche’s writing.In that case, what kind of naturalist is Nietzsche? And what does Nietzsche think is the sources of normativity and how to get it? These will be the focus of this paper.This paper is divided into three chapters. In chapter one, Nietzsche’s naturalism is analyzed in detail, which is kind of speculative methodological naturalism, attributing to maintain "methodological continuity" as well as speculative "result continuity"with the newest science. But how could Nietzsche be a naturalist? The five refutations and interpretations, his treating science seriously, his hostility to the robust reductionism of materialism, and his skepticism of human nature and essence. In chapter two, Nietzsche’s normativity was analyzed in the background of naturalism.His normative goal is to achieve the highest flourishing and excellence in human being. He doesn’t think universality is a necessary condition for normativity and there exists only one "true morality". As to the acquisition of normativity, Nietzsche argues that normality is inherent in the "forms of life",and that normativity is a phenomenon that involves and requires first-personal engagement and third-personal internalization on the part of a human agent. With internalization and then identification,normativity finally gets. The last chapter evaluates Nietzsche’s naturalism and normativity that Nietzsche’s naturalism is kind of minimalist naturalism, and his normativity is aesthetic but still has dilemma needs to be solved.
