Zhang Dai was a famous litterateur who has won outstanding achievements in prose, poetry, biography, and other fields during the Ming and the Qing dynasty. The distinctive feature of Zhang Dai's works is the description of the lower class, on which has been paid less attention in academia field at present. The object study of this paper focuses on the lower class life and the lower figures in Zhang Dai's works. The comprehensive analysis of many images of the little man are also involved in my study, which aims to explore the features of their characteristics, the causes and the values among Zhang Dai's works.This paper will be discussed in the following aspects: The preface is about the value of the study, the current achievements of the tasks and my approaches mainly.The first chapter gives an overview of the landscapes of life in lower class and the range of the lower class characters being studied. The second chapter discusses the real and personality of the lower class features. Zhang Dai not only concentrated on the description of their personalities, but on their appearance and temperament to be described in a truly and naturally way. The third chapter discusses the equal awareness of Zhang Dai among lower class characters. On the one hand, he evaluated lower class characters with new values; on the other hand,he can also respect women.The forth chapter analyzes the written causes on the lower class, from which mainly focuses on the flowing aspects: great changes took place in cities of the late Ming dynasty; social mobility; personal factors. The fifth chapter aims to explores the written meaning of lower classes characters in works of Zhang Dai, which will be discussed in 2 aspects: social and historical values; the value in the literary history.
