China began to learn advanced science and technology from the west and embarked gradually on the modernization process since the late Qing Dynasty.Along with the process,Western thought began to be spread to China.Since The May Fourth Movement, the Western rational thought of "science" and "democracy" has gradually changed the attitude of Chinese people to understand the world. Some of the things that were once considered sacred and inviolable have become outdated, even superstitious by the people. In this situation, the exchange of Buddhism between Tibetan people and Han people ushered in a new era in the period of The Republic of China.Compared to the single line transmission of Tibetan Buddhism in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were more exchanges between them.Under the stimulation of the modernity, the exchange had obvious characteristics of the times. This paper focused on how the characteristics of the times of the Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism exchanges have shaped the people's religious ideas. The paper consists four parts. The first part mainly focuses on the background of the exchange(the dilemma that China faced at the beginning of The Republic of China)and the possible ways out for Tibetan Buddhism. The second part talks about the reason of the fading of the Chinese Buddhism and its transformation, mainly based on some famous people. The third one discuss about the process of the exchange as well as the modernity hidden in the process, also the influence. The forth part concentrate on the influence of modernity on Buddhism.
