At the turn of 20 th century, the Vietnamese society has witnessed dramatic change, which was different from any other ones in history. The change happened as a result of the cultural collision and integration. The Vietnamese culture was greatly impacted by foreign culture both form western and eastern powers, and both of them had profound history.During the process, the huge influence directly led to the transformation of Vietnamese society, economy and culture from “traditional” to“modern”,in which the cultural transformation was most obvious.Though up to now, both in China and abroad, there is no monographs on indepth and systematic research about the cultural transformation during that period, while the research achievement related to this subject are plenty. Not only the scholars in Vietnam, but also in China and many other countries have done researches on this subject. However, their opinions were partially focused on certain cultural transformation phenomenon or the detailed description on reason, which the author supposes is biased. Therefore, based on the scholars' previous experience and research achievement, the author tries to sort out cultural transformation details and explain it in apanoramic perspective. The thesis is divided into 6 chapters: in the first chapter, the author elaborates on the background, research methods and research achievements.Chapter two explains the basic theory of culture and cultural transformation.Chapter three is an introduction to the domestic and international background of cultural transformation period.Chapter four analyses the reasons of cultural transformation. In Chapter five, manifestations in ideology, education and culture as well as literature during that period are presented.Chapter six, which is the last one, makes a conclusion on previous chapters and illustrates the influence and significance of the cultural transformation at the turn of 20 th century.Cultural transformation at the turn of 20 th century is a subject with academic value. With this thesis, which relatively fully introduces the subject both in China and Vietnam, the author expects to make some contributions to the research of this subjectwithin her own ability.
