Research On Landscape Painting Since The 20th Century

Having developed from the Wei and Jin Dynasty,the Sui and Tang Dynasty,the Five Dynasties,the Song and Yuan Dynasty,Chinese landscape painting has developed a complete system and has its history of a thousand years.Studies of landscape painting from the Ming and Qing Dynasty and even in contemporary time,all started from the copying of famous works of previous dynasties.By looking at the landscape painting of the central plains and Taihang by Jing Hao and Guan Tong,of Jiangnan by Dong Yuan,of Zhongnan and Taihua Mountain by Fan Kuan and Guo Xi,of Hua Mountain by Wang Lv in the Ming dynasty and his words,"I learned from my heart,and my heart learned form Hua Mountain".These masters discovered art in nature.And Shi Tao's words,"Searching for all kinds of mountains to prepare a draft",also indicates that art cannot be divided from the practice in life.Since the Ming and Qing Dynasty,influenced by the orthodox school,"Four Kings",the pursuing of the ink and imitation of ancient style had been popular in Chinese landscape painting.They went far away from nature,life,society,thus lost the creativity.The situation made Chinese landscape painting set off to a wrong path which full of formulation and generalization and then it went on the declineIn 20th century,under the background of the May Fourth Movement,the boom of art revolution,reform and opening,and the diversification of social development,"sketching" became a basic way and panting method to reform Chinese painting.Painters began to walk out to get close to the society,nature and the real life,to undertake a great deal of sketching activities.The development of landscape sketching has been a unique scene in the contemporary art history.From "the Study of Nature" of traditional landscape painting,the landscape painters' reforming practice--sketching in 20th century,the plunging into the thick of life and facing the real mountain and lake in sketching activities at 1950s to 1960s,to the new methods in new period and new times in sketching at 1970s to 1980s and even to 21st century,marks the investigating point of development and reform of contemporary landscape painting.As sketching is an important stage in studying landscape painting,the traditional Chinese painting theory attaches great importance to "the Study of Nature",which means the observation,realization and sketching of nature.With the change of dynasties,the theories,techniques and art characteristics also keep innovating,changing,which possesses its epochal character.The thesis studies landscape sketching in the 20th century through combining theories and practice.During the study,the author primarily consulted numerous information according to the subject,and got to be familiar with the developing history of landscape painting in the 20th century,comprehensively searched the interrelated information,trying to make illumination for the following aspects:firstly,the definition of "sketching" and semantic conversion;secondly,the painting theories concern "the Study of Nature" of Chinese traditional landscape painting,as well as relative treatises about paintings in different times;thirdly,discussion about landscape sketching in the 20th century in different periods,the background of landscape painting began to pursue sketching,and distinct manifestation of sketching activities,view of art,painting characteristics of landscape painters in different periods;fourthly,epochal character of landscape sketching in new period;fifthly,representation of the meaning of landscape sketching in the 20th century,which includes the exploration over the background of it,characteristics of it,view of art and sketching practice of artists,and tries to discover the revolutionary reason and process of landscape painting in the 20th century.Finally,the thesis talks about the influence on creation and development of Chinese landscape painting brought by the meaning,the new painting and brushstroke techniques of landscape sketching in the 20th century.
