Chinese traditional literati painting,which is a valuable treasure of Chinese traditional culture and art,originated in the Wei and Jin dynasties,and had developed into an extremely mature and systematic system during the Song,Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties.Chinese traditional literati painting has its own historical and cultural background,such as Confucianism,Taoism and Buddhism.In the process of its development,the pursuit of emotional expression and spiritual realm has been throughout,thereby forming a relatively stable aesthetic feature.The western modern painting,which is developed into varied styles and numerous types,has greatly influenced the development of western art.It has not only broken away from the traditional styles of painting but also rebuild the painting methodology and redefined the structure of art.It displays individuality and innovation,emphasizes the pursuit of artists'subjectivity,and expresses the strong emotional and spiritual demands of the artists.The development of western modernist painting is closely related to the massive historical and cultural transformation of modern society.This thesis analyzes and compares the origin and development of Chinese traditional literati painting and western modern painting,as well as their philosophical foundation.By analyzing the works of some artists,we can understand their spiritual differences and similarities,and the inspiration to contemporary paintings.
