Literati painting is a unique concept which been derived from traditional Chineseculture. literati painters make the Chinese ancient philosophy, aesthetics, literature,calligraphy and other cultural forms integrate in the painting based on the Chinesetraditional culture, forms the unique aesthetic spirit of literati painting. literati‘sStraight From The Heart emotional expression is the key of literati painting freehandbrushwork. literati painting arised from the Tang Dynasty, turn more and more maturein the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and then occupied the mainstream position of thepainting in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Since from WangWei, ink painting wasgradually being respected, especially after the rise of literati painting, ink painting, asperceptual materials for pure and simple in Chinese painting, is the material mediumfor painters to explore their own inner nature of mind.There are some relationships can not be ignored between literati painting and inkpainting, but Modern China impacted by the western culture and went through a seriesof cultural change, on the one hand, Literati painting influenced by the ideologicaltrend of Western art and attracted much criticism, on the other hand, in the late QingDynasty, many literati painting were too stylized and away from the essence of literatipainting freehand, so literati painting would change as inevitable. In that time, inkpainting was still the main type of Chinese painting. Even the concept of “Chinesepainting” compared with the western painting mainly refers to the Chinese ink paintingin fact. Although literati painting gradually withdraw from the orthodox position ofChinese painting, the ink painting led Chinese painting to modern development with anew attitude. In the late Qing Dynasty painting, especially after The May4thMovement, the mainstream position of literati painting was quickly replaced by thefrenzy of realism, literati painting once faced the risk of marginalization. But Chinesepainting culture never sever, there are several literati painting masters do not rigidlyadhere to the traditional shackles, don’t blind to the western art as the standard andnegative the value of literati painting, facing literati painting development dilemma,understand the development dilemma of literati painting, inherit and develop theessence of traditional literati painting, make literati painting’s spirit continue. In this paper, we start from the traditional literati paintings, through the concept of literatipainting, analyzing the evolution process, the connotation of the spirit, to understandthe value and significance of literati painting. At the same time, ink painting had beeninfluenced by western realism and modern art, contributed to a different style ofmodern ink painting. Influenced by a number of factors, modern ink painting isbecoming more diversified including traditional type, pan traditional, non conventionaltype.
