For most Chinese students, reading is one of the main ways to learn English as a foreign language. Reading comprehension, which is used to examine students' reading ability, is always an important part of English examinations. Thus, teachers take the teaching of English reading rather seriously. However, under the framework of the current classroom-based teaching organization, there have been significant differences in reading among the students of the same class. On the other hand, teachers just take into account the average reading ability of the students when setting goals of reading teaching, designing class activities and reading assignments. As a result, advanced students find reading boring, and the students with lower reading ability lose interest and confidence in reading, for they can not reach the target requirement. Based on the above factors, the author tried an experiment of covertly stratified English teaching.Covertly stratified English teaching in reading is a kind of teaching, in which teachers covertly group students into three levels – A, B and C, based on students' abilities, intelligence, interest and potentialities in study. Then in class, teaching goals, designs, guidance and evaluation on students are also grouped to meet different needs of students who are of different levels and have different English competence. The paper provides the practical ways of covertly stratified English teaching in reading, makes a research of the problems that affect junior middle school students' English reading and exploits methods such as a large number of literature, relevant data, as well as the questionnaire survey, test before and after comparison experiment and computer simulation to demonstrate its effectiveness. The results of this research show that covertly stratified English teaching is beneficial to students in the above-mentioned aspects of learning interest, academic grades and teacher-student relationship.
