Reading is an important approach for English learners to get language inputand the foundation of language output.Reading is the core part of English teaching and plays an irreplaceable important role in English learning.Among various kinds of English tests,the increase of English reading's test types also reflects that the request of the ministry of education about English reading is improving.Nowadays,Junior high school students' English reading ability is poor.How to solve this problem and improve the efficiency of English reading teaching has become the key and difficult point in English teaching.The stratified teaching mode promotes individualized quality education and remarkable achievements have been obtained since it was brought in China in 1990 s and applied in English class.However,the layered approach also hurts the students' self-esteem and learning interest.In order to improve the teaching efficiency of English reading and students' English reading interest,this paper adopted the covertly stratified English teaching mode and the students were not informed of the stratification.In this way,students' learning interest and self-esteemcould be protected.The researcher put forward the questions in accordance with the relevant theories and studies.The application research on covertly stratified English teaching was carried out in Xi'an Junior High School from September,2016 to December,2016,in Class 2 Grade one.Students werecovertly groupedinto three levels based on students' abilities,interest and reading scores.Then in the class,instructional objectives,activities,assignments and teaching evaluation were also divided to match different students.This reasearch uses test papers and interviews to explore the change of students' English reading achievement and reading interest.This research mainly studied and solvedthe following three problems:1.How to apply covertly stratified English teaching method in the junior middle school's English reading classroom?2.What effect can covertly stratifiedteaching methodhave on the participants' academic grades?3.What effect can covertly stratifiedteaching methodhave on the participants' English reading interest after the study?The results show that the improvement of English reading scores in class 2 is relatively greater.This method promotes students' self-efficacy,protects students' self-esteem and at the same timeimproves students' interest in English reading.With the help of the headmaster and teachers in school,the experiment has achieved satisfactory results.Based on these findings,this paper puts forward three suggestions.Teachers should strengthen the consciousness of cooperation and competition among the students in the covertly stratified teaching process,handle the relationship between covertly stratified teaching and synchronous teaching,and strengthen their own professional quality and comprehensive ability.
