A Study On The Choice Of Substituted Industries In Tangshan

Over the past few years,sustainable development of resource-based cities has drawn extensive attention from the central government and the academic community.As a typical resource-based city that “was founded based on coal and developed depending on steel”,Tangshan suffers from the short industrial chain,low economic value and high loss of economic effectiveness due to heavy industry that takes a dominant position in the city,typically steel and coal.In 2013,the National Development and Reform Commission defined Tangshan as a renewable resource-based city in hope of it would lower its demands on resources during urban development and transform into a comprehensive city.As coordinated development of Beijing,Tianjin and Hebei Province is being boosted,coastal economic transference strategy of BeijingTianjin-Hebei integration has also had direct impact on the economy of Tangshan,which depends on not only transformation of resource-based industries but also the replacement and development of non-resource-based industries.As a result,introducing non-resource-based industries that are highly adaptable and sustainable has become a top priority,as well as a focus of attention for governmental decision-makers,business investors and theory researchers.In this thesis,the author conducts qualitative study on the succeeding industries by investigating the development of resource-based industries and tertiary industry in Tangshan following a combined research strategy of qualitative and quantitative analysis based on structure evolvement theory,development theory of regional economics and sustainable development theory that make up of the theory system of this thesis.In the following,the situation of industrial structure of Tangshan as a whole is analyzed,followed by the overall development orientation of substituted industries by means of quantitative analysis using Shiftshare Analysis,i.e.seeking substituted industries from the secondary industry,taking tertiary industry as one of the substituted industries and boosting its development.On that basis,6 major principles for substituted industries are put forward as per the inclusion criteria;10 indices for substituted industries are determined.A model that is used to sort the 17 industries that serve as important components of Tangshan's industry is stabled using Principal Component Analysis.Finally,a total number of four industries,i.e.ferrous metal rolling processing industry,metal product industry,chemical material and product manufacturing industry and transformation equipment manufacturing industry,are sorted out as substituted industries that should be given priority in development.The author ends this thesis by putting forward some suggestions for the substituted industries of Tangshan.
