Canada and China have had diplomatic ties for 46 years and have had a strategic partnership for the last 11 years.Previous research has shown that Canada has a fast growing clean technology(renewable energy)sector,and China has a large strategic market in this industry,but statistics show that Canada is falling behind in terms of exporting into this market in China.Literature on the international trading environment between Canada and China in this sector has mainly focused on policy and infrastructure issues as well as the issue of protection of intellectual property(IP).The author analyzes the clean technology(renewable energy)industry from a strategic and comprehensive management perspective and examines methods for fostering capabilities for increased bilateral trade between China and Canada in this segment of the market.A literature review will be conducted to consider the theories that serve as a basis for international trade policy and practices.The clean technology(renewable energy)markets in both China and Canada will be examined by a review of articles and government publications.Since the clean technology industry consists of many different subsectors,the area of research in the semi-structured interviews and case studies will be focused on one sector,renewable energy.Interviews will be conducted with business professionals in management positions in Ontario,Canada and Shanghai,China.The case studies will be used to illustrate past and current management strategies used in bilateral trade practices in this industry.The results of this study will advance understanding of this trading partnership,the clean technology(renewable energy)industry and what challenges and opportunities exist for both China and Canada in this sector of the economy.The findings will be very relevant,as both Canada and China have a strong mandate at this time to utilize more clean technologies in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.The objective of this thesis is to determine whether Canada and China are realizing their full potential as trading partners and utilizing effective management strategies in this sector.If there is increased investment and trade in the clean technology(renewable)industry,it will benefit both countries by creating jobs,growing their economy and building a sustainable future.
