Based on the national resource and environment database, the spatial-temporal changes of urban and rural construction land use were analyzed and studied on geometric and fractal geometry in Hubei Province since 1990. The main conclusions and innovations of the paper are as follows:1. The cultivated land is 65510.41 km2, forest land 92248.77 km2, grassland 6876.09 km2, water 12370.60 km2, urban rural and industrial land 8389.67 km2, unused land 368.14 km2 in Hubei Province at 2015, 35.27%, 49.66%, 3.70%, 6.66%, 4.52% and 0.20% respectively.2. The expansion area of urban construction land in Hubei Province is 762.56 km2 during the 1990-2005, of which the fastest growing urban construction land is Wuhan City and Jiangxia, the growth area of more than 110 km2. The vast western region and other towns around Hubei Province, urban construction land growth is not great. During the 2005-2015, expansion area of urban construction land in Hubei Province is 3235.16 km2, the largest growth area is at Wuhan City, including Wuhan City, Huangpi, Jiangxia,the total growth area reached 618.10 km2, accounting for nearly 20 % of the total area of the urban construction land growth in Hubei Province. The counties and cities with the smallest urban construction land expansion are mainly distributed in the mountains of western Hubei, Dabie Mountains and farthest mountainous areas in northwest Hubei.3. The urban land expansion type in Wuhan is analyzed by convex hull method. In general, the urban land expansion type in Wuhan belongs to the infilling type from 1990 to 2015, and the shape of urban contours tends to be compact. The fractal dimension of urban spatial form of Wuhan urban land is increasing from 1990 to 2015, which may be related to the natural geographical conditions and planning policies on Wuhan.4. The rural settlements with high density are often the more developed rural areas,such as Jianghan Plain and Huanggang area. The density of rural settlements in these areas is high. The rural areas with smaller densities are mainly mountainous areas in western and northwest Hubei. The mountainous areas are relatively poor in natural conditions, the economy is not well developed, the rural population is relatively small,the rural settlements are relatively small and the distribution density is low.5. At 2015 in Hubei Province, the rural settlements with more uniform distribution are the several counties in the Jianghan Plain. With the agglomeration distribution in the hills and mountains, the distribution of rural settlements in Hubei Province changed a little from 1990 to 2005, but the CV value of Xingshan County and Badong County in Hubei Province had a great increase. The distribution of rural settlements in Hubei Province from 2005 to 2015 was less, but the CV value of rural settlements in Zigui County increased greatly. The increase in CV value indicates more aggregating trend,which may be the result of the population migration in the Three Gorges reservoir area during this period.
