China's economic growth slows as the mode of economic development transforms,industrial structure adjusts and negative effects of a massive government economic stimulus highlight,upgrading of the manufacture industry faces more and more difficulties.On the one hand,China's manufacture industry has been locked in the low-end part of the global value chain for a long time.On the other hand,the development of the manufacturing industry is facing tightening environmental constraints,contradiction between economic development and energy is getting worse.Under the dual pressures of economic downturn and environmental protection,the development of manufacturing industry needs to find a sustainable path of achieving economic development and environmental protection win – win.Technological innovation is the fundamental way to achieve manufacturing upgrading.However,traditional technological innovation doesn't concern environmental factors in the product life cycle and cannot solve the environmental constraints of industrial development.Green technology innovation is able to build a bridge between economic growth and environmental protection.Therefore,we will study the driving effect of green technology innovation on China's manufacturing industry's high-end and clean upgrading in this paper.Based on reviewing the existing literature,in this paper,the environment and energy factors are included in the scope of manufacturing upgrading,we expand and deepen the connotation of manufacturing upgrading,which is divided into three types: value chain-oriented,energy saving-oriented and environment friendly-oriented.The concept and connotation of green technology innovation are clearly defined,and the difference between green technology innovation and traditional technological innovation is analyzed from the aspects of goal and result,power source,operation and diffusion process.Then,in the theoretical analysis part,we expand the Copeland and Taylor(1994)model and verify that green technology innovation could improve production capacity,reduce energy consumption and pollution emissions.On the basis of the theoretical model,we bulid the measurement model of the three types of manufacturing industry upgrading.We use the differential GMM method and select the 2005-2014 China manufacturing industry panel data to test the theoretical hypothesis.Results show that:(1)Green technology innovation has a significant impact on manufacturing value chain-oriented,energy saving-oriented and environment friendly-oriented upgrading.(2)Compared with the traditional technological innovation,green technology innovation is a more critical factor to drive the upgrading of manufacturing industry.(3)Green technology innovation has different effect on the different modes of manufacturing upgrading,the effect of environment-oriented upgrading is most significant,and the effect of value chain-oriented upgrading is the weakest.Basing on green technology innovation,this paper aims to provide a theoretical basis for China to improve the quality of technological innovation,to make more effective technology policies environmental policies and industrial policies,and to find a breakthrough for the green upgrading of China's manufacturing industry.
