Shenyang is the capital city of Liaoning province.In recent years Shenyang develops rapidly to undertake "The 12th national games" and "The revitalization of the northeast old industrial base" as a leading city in northeast China.In such cases,if we don't pay much attention to the macro control of urban development,it is easy to be disorderly.That will lead to environmental degradation,traffic congestion,lower quality of life.So we should build a compact city.Compact city is an sustainable and ecological city.It can make city developing,at the same time,protect natural resources from the disorder spread.To build a compact city is a kind of strategy and that is a way to build an energy-saving and ground-saving city.We should calculate of Shenyang's urban compactness and find out the main factors of influence for building a compass city.This paper use a variety of numerical analysis method for research.First,build the evaluation system about compactness of Shenyang,use the Principal Component Analysis(PCA)measure compactness from 2002 to 2011,and find out three principal components from twenty-nine factors about urban compactness.Analysis compactness' impact indexes of Shenyang according to the result of principal component.Then,measure the urban efficiency and urban ecological benefits of Shenyang using Data Envelopement Analysis(DEA)and Pearson correlation analysis methods.That proved urban compactness can promote urban efficiency and urban ecological benefits.Finally,put forward some countermeasures about how to build a compact city according to five influence factors:policy factors,demographic factors,land factors,traffic factors and economic factors.
