In the situation of the shipping market downturn,the scrapping of old ships and reducing shipping supply have been considered as effective strategy to ease the contradiction between supply and demand.To accelerating the elimination speed,optimizing the structure,and promoting the competitiveness of Chinese dry bulk fleet,a Scrapping Subsidies for Chinese ship has been introduced by the Ministry of Transport in 2013.In the above context,the dry bulk fleet update problem in a shipping company is studied by taking the scrapping subsidies and the fluctuation of international dry bulk shipping market into account.First,with the vessel capacity and volume of world seaborne trade in dry bulk shipping market,an ARMA model is built to forecast maritime transport demand in dry bulk shipping market in next five years.Second,according to the demand changes and scrapping subsidy policy for the dry bulk ship,a multi-period dynamic renewal model of dry bulk fleet is proposed to maximize the profit of shipping companies,which can be used to determine the type and quantity of ships that should be scrapped and newly built in each period.The residual value income of the scrapped ships,the idle cost of old ships,the cost of the new shipbuilding,the subsidy income,and the freight opportunity cost or earnings are considered in the model.Last,the dry bulk fleet of China Ocean Shipping Group Co.,Ltd.is selected for a case study.A fleet renewal plan in next five years is determined according to the fleet structure and capacity of the company under the scrapping subsidy policy.The results show that with the scrapping subsidy,the fleet size will sharply shrink in the first two years because that the existing fleet is aging and that the dry bulk shipping demand is still in the downturn period.While,the fleet size will start to expand quickly from the third year because that the demand of dry bulk transportation is also increased at the beginning of third year.Moreover,the shipping company will have little loss during the whole study period,which indicates that the scrapping subsidy can play a positive role to improve the fleet structure.The results of this paper validate the utilities of the subsidy policy,and can further provide a reference for shipping companies to update their fleet.
