In recent years, there have been many social issues related to corporate behavior in China, such as the food safety issues with Sanlu milk powder and workers' rights and interests issues of Foxconn. This also reflects the current situation:China's corporate social responsibility practice has not yet fully developed. Therefore, this thesis will compare and analyze the factors influencing CSR in China and the United States and guide the direction of China's CSR development. This thesis uses an empirical analytical method to examine 3,337 company-years' worth of data for Chinese companies during the period of 2012-2016.It explores the influencing factors of CSR performance of Chinese companies, and then compares that with analysis from 1386 company-years' worth of data from US companies from 2014 to 2016.The results of the comparative analysis show that in China, corporate size is positively related to CSR performance, while in the United States, there is no significant relationship between corporate size and CSR performance;in China, female leaders are positively correlated with CSR performance, which is similar to the result of an 8-year-old study of American companies. However,in the United States today, there is no clear relationship between female leaders and CSR performance;in addition,Chinese companies with overseas operations usually have better CSR performance;and there is no significant difference in the performance of CSR between state-owned and private enterprises;pollution-related companies in both China and the United States have worse CSR performance. Finally, corporate debt level, number of employees, and financial performance have different impacts on CSR performance in China and the United States.Based on the research results, the last chapter provides some policy suggestions for the development of CSR practices in China. For example, gender equity in the workplace, requiring high-profitability companies to adopt more CSR polices, calling for action by small businesses, asking banks to consider CSR performance when lending money, and improving the corporate governance of Chinese companies are all potential policy tools that flow out of this research.
