The Impact Of Performance Orientation Culture On Innovation

Due to the lasting impact of low cost strategy,performance oriented culture prevails among Chinese firms,but whether it can promote innovation has been controversial.Although there are a great deal of research on organizational culture,such as market orientation,learning orientation,and so on,but there are few studies on performance orientation which prevails in Chinese enterprises.What is the effect of performance orientation culture on enterprise innovation?Based on the behavioral theory of the firm,first of all,the innovation is classified as exploitation and exploration.And then in order to confirm the influence boundary,we introduce the moderating variables of the centralization and competition intensity from the internal and external;Finally our study analyzes the different influence of performance orientation culture on exploration and exploitation and what kind of influence will be produced after adding the moderating variable.Based on a questionnaire survey of 115 firms from high-tech industry clusters in Hubei Province,we find that performance orientation culture can promote the development of exploitation rather than exploration,but in the highly competitive market,performance orientation culture can bring exploration.The centralized structure of the enterprise will weaken the role of performance orientation culture in promoting innovation.This study is important for the understanding of the role of performance orientation culture in innovation behavior.This study has a rich theoretical and practical significance,theoretical meaning is shown in three aspects: firstly from the perspective of corporate behavior theory,reveals the different effects of performance orientation on two kinds of innovation,provides a new explanation for understanding the relationship between performance orientation culture and innovation;Secondly confirms boundary conditions;Finally,we expand the application of the behavioral theory of the firm.Practical significance is mainly to provide reference for enterprise balanced exploration and exploitation.
