Environmental problems have gradually becoming one of the urgent problems to be solved and paid attention to in today's society.The Yangtze River Delta Region as the Central Government's Position for the Most Comprehensive Economic Center in China,and energy consumption is one of the main causes of environmental degradation,then,from the perspective of energy consumption,it is important for the Yangtze River Delta to study the relationship between it and air quality in order to formulate targeted energy-saving and emission reduction measures and strengthen regional coordination of environmental governance.In view of this,based on the theoretical analysis of the relationship between energy consumption and air quality,a comprehensive statistical analysis method is used to study the comprehensive effect of the "energy consumption-sulfur dioxide emissions" system.Specifically: First,the correlation between energy consumption and sulfur dioxide emissions is analyzed by unit root test,cointegration test and Granger causality test.On this basis,static panel regression and dynamic panel analysis are used to analyze the relationship between energy consumption and sulfur dioxide.In this process,the influence of the control variable is considered.Further research on the relationship between the two parties is carried out by the use of the regression discontinuity.Second,the comparative analysis method was used to compare the differences in energy consumption and sulfur dioxide emissions between the 20 heavily polluted cities in the Yangtze River Delta,and the differences were classified.Through the study,the paper draws the following conclusions: First,considering the impact of energy consumption structure,industrial structure and energy efficiency,the total coefficient of energy consumption to air quality is 0.4579.This shows that total energy consumption control plays a positive role in improving air quality.At the same time,structural optimization and technological improvement are also conducive to improving air quality,and the role of structural path in the sample interval is greater than that of the technical path.Second.The sulfur dioxide emission has the characteristics of inertia.Specifically,the previous year's SO2 emissions increased by 1 units and then 0.4278 units in the year of sulfur dioxide emissions.Therefore,the lag effect of sulfur dioxide should also be taken into account in consideration of emission reduction.This shows that reducing emissions is a systematic project,and also shows the difficulty of emission reduction;Third,when the policy is considered,the inhibition of the policy on sulfur dioxide emissions has reached 0.8648.Compared with no consideration of policies,reducing the energy consumption by 1% and optimizing the energy consumption structure of 1%,the sulfur dioxide emissions will increase by 0.2490% and 0.0046% respectively.This shows that the policy has a positive effect on reducing sulfur dioxide emissions.Fourth,considering the policy or not,considering the inertia effect of sulfur dioxide or not,there are differences in the heavy polluted cities in the Yangtze River Delta.Therefore,in practice,we should not only emphasize the coordination function of energy conservation and emission reduction policy,but also take account of the development of other areas' economy,energy and environment,so as to achieve effective coordination between regions.Based on the above research,it is considered that structural optimization and efficiency improvement under the “new normal” economy will have important implications for further improving improve the role of energy consumption in emission reduction system.Therefore,we should pay more attention to the development of knowledge and technology innovation,natural resource endowment,capital scale and so on,change the extensive economic development model in China,reduce pollutant emissions,improve air quality greatly,and cooperate to promote beautiful China.
