As one of the urban garbage, garden waste is used as a covering matrix for green treatment, which has become a major solution in many developed cities. However, there are few feasibility studies on the reuse of garden waste in northern cities. In order to understand the influence of garden waste on urban green environment under the climatic conditions in northern China, find the optimum covering thickness under different site conditions, and give application suggestions in northern cities, according to three different types of green spaces in park, courtyard and street road, the paper designed 5 kinds of treatment of different covering thickness of garden waste and studied respectively the influence of soil water content, soil temperature, organic matter content, available nitrogen content, available phosphorus content, available potassium content and weeds inhibitory effects of three different depths of 0-10 cm,10-20 cm and 20-30 cm.The optimum covering thickness under three different site conditions was summarized up by factor analysis and cluster analysis. The results are as follows:(1)In the northern climate environment, the effect of garden waste on the landscape plant growth environment changes with the increase of the covering thickness. The thicker the covering is,the larger influence it has.(2)Covering garden waste has some regulating effects on soil temperature changes. In low-temperature seasons, there is a positive correlation between the increase of soil temperature of landscape plant roots and the covering thickness. In high-temperature seasons, the decrease of roots soil temperature is positively correlated with the covering thickness.(3)The effects of garden waste covering on the soil water content, temperature and weed inhibition of landscape plants are immediate, and the effects on soil pH,organic matter and nutrient content in soil are slowly released, which increases with the duration of covering.(4)Under the same covering thickness, the effect of garden waste will gradually decrease with the increase of soil depth.(5)The optimum covering thickness for park and courtyard green garden waste is 8cm,and for street roads is 5cm.(6)Covering garden waste can play a very effective role in promoting the growth of landscape plants and can effectively reduce the cost of garden maintenance. This study started from the perspective of the influence of different covering thicknesses of garden waste on landscape plant growth environment, combined with the influence trends of three different green spaces and data analysis to determine the optimum covering thickness under different site conditions, which can provide effective reference and reasonable suggestions for the application of garden waste in the future landscape design.
