The multi-component hard coatings layer exhibit higher toughness, better corrosion and oxidation resistance, which make them promising candidates as protective coatings for the die.In this present work,CrNiTiN thin films with the different Ni content was deposited on the H13 steel and silion?110?wafers by closed-filed unbalanced magnetron sputtering ion plating technique. The microstructure, morphology and composition were characterized and analyzed by using SEM,EDS,XPS,XRD;the hardness, adhesion, corrosion, abrasive resistance and surface energy was measured by vicker microhardness tester, friction and wear spectrometer, electrochemical workstation and contact angle measuring device.Effect of plasma nitriding and shot blasting on the H13 steel substrate on microstructure, composition and performance of CrNiTiN films were analysised. The results show that CrNiTiN coatings layer has a very dense microstructure, with a columnar grain crystal.CrNiTiN coatings exhibits a fcc structure CrN,the nickel is existed by the way of Ni2+and simple substance.with the increasing of the Ni target current?04A?:the preferred growth orientation of the coatings change from?220?to?200?;the thickness of the coatings is increased from 2.1 to 3.7um;the surface hardness, toughness, the abrasive resistance and surface energy of the coatings firstly increase and then decrease. The coating has best performance(3304HV0.01,COF=0.5)when the Ni target current is 1A.CrNiTiN coating layer was deposited on surface of plasma nitrided and shot blasted steel. The duplex treatment does not affect the coating structure, but it does affect the coating/substrate adhension and surface energy. The coating has best performance when the Ni target current is 1A with the plasma nitrided steel. Therefore, the Ni incorporation can provide an effective route to tailor the structure and properties of the Cr–Ti–Ni–N coatings. The good combined properties of the Cr–Ti–Ni–N coatings demonstrate their potential for applications in plastic injection molding.
