Secondary fiber has become the primary material of paper industry.How to increase the strength of econdary fiber has become a research hotspot.In the study an eco-friendly polymeric additive which could be prepared from waste seaweeds,sodium alginate(SA)developed as functional additives with polyamideamine-epichlorohydrin(PAE)was used to improve the mechanical properties of econdary fiber.The effect of PAE and the binary system of SA-PAE on the wastepaper properties were investigated.For the efficient use of PAE and the realization of the secondary fiber production of high quality paper.In this paper the enhancement effect of binary sestem of modified PAE-SA system and the ternary system of PAE-CMC-SA and PAE-SA-AmPAM were studied.In addition,the enhancement mechanism of PAE-SA binary system was studied by means of FTIR,SEM,AFM,C and N C and N contents.The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The SA was successfully extracted and it possessed a high potential as a biodegradable additive in papermaking processes.The PAE-SA binary system was better than single addition of PAE on the strength properties of paper.When the dosage of PAE was 0.8%and the dosage of SA was 0.4%,the dry tensile index,wet tensile index,tear index,burst index and folding resistance compared with the paper which was added into PAE of 0.8%increased by 26.65%,81.25%18.29%,27.78%,96.43%respectively.Compared with the original recycle paper they were increased by 48.32%,2800%,25.31%,82.54%,223%.(2)The acrylic modified PAE-SA binary system was better than single addition of PAE on the strength properties of paper.When adding 0.6%modified PAE-0.6%SA,the dry and wet strength of the paper was the best.Compared with the modified 0.8%PAE-0.4%SA paper dry tensile index,the wet tensile index increased by 3.77%,14.85%respectively.The addition of 0.6%modified PAE-0.4%SA has the same effect with unmodified 0.8%PAE-0.4%SA paper.(3)In the ternary system of PAE-CMC-SA,the best adding point of CMC was between PAE and SA.In the PAE-S A-AmPAM ternary system,the best adding point was after PAE and SA.The PAE-SA-AmPAM and PAE-CMC-SA ternary system were all better than the PAE-SA binary system on the strength properties of paper.What is more,PAE-SA-CMC ternary system was better than the PAE-SA-AmPAM ternary system significantly.When the dosage of PAE and SA were 0.8%and 0.4%,the dosage of CMC was 0.6%,PAE-CMC-SA ternary system had the best enhanced effect than PAE-SA binary system.Compared with PAE-SA binary system the dry tensile index,wet tensile index of handsheet were increased by 19.48%and 39.64%respectively.(4)The increasing of mechanical performance of secondary fiber was mainly depending on the electrostatic adsorption and film coating structure by the increasing of the PAE adsorption,the crosslinking of PAE and itself or fiber,the adsorption of fines between the fibers and the fiber bonding area.
