A Comparative Study Of Xi Jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought And Western Ecological Modernization Theory

Western ecological modernization theory is a kind of reformist shallow green thought,an amendment to the anti-naturalness of capital logic within the framework of capitalism.Being confined to the capitalist system framework,in the matter of ecological and environmental issues,western ecological modernization theory focused on technological innovation,management innovation and industrial transformation and upgrading.To a certain extent,it contributed to the improvement of environmental quality in western developed capitalist countries locally."Xi Jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought" is a new theoretical summary first proposed at the National Ecological Environment Protection Conference in 2018.It is a general term for the guiding ideology and practice strategy of China's ecological civilization construction that has gradually formed and developed since the 18th National Congress,and it is the organic component of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.It includes,but is not limited to,the ecological civilization thought of Comrade Xi Jinping,while the ecological civilization thought of Comrade Xi Jinping since the 18th National Congress is an outstanding representative among them.Xi Jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought is an open system and is still developing.In generalizing,Xi Jinping Ecological Civilization Thought based on the basic socialist system framework,adheres to the guiding position of Marxist ecological thought and learns nutrition from the rich ecological thought resources in China's traditional culture,strongly appeals for "ecological community" "life community" and "human destiny community" and firmly grasps the public character of the ecological environment issues,adheres to the principle of the sustainability and fairness of development and lays emphasis on the complete transformation of the mode of production and way of life,and eventually hopes for comprehensive solution to three aspects of ecological environmental problems,i.e.environmental pollution,resources shortage and ecological degradation.The Western ecological modernization theory and Xi jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought have been studied separately,but the comparative study of these two has not been carried out.This paper attempts to carry out a comparative study on the basis of systematic formulation of western ecological modernization theory and Xi Jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought.Based on the understanding of the similarities and differences between their connotations,the paper points out that,on the one hand,the western ecological modernization thought brings inspiration in terms of attaching great importance to environmental governance,speeding up economic transformation and emphasizing scientific and technological innovation,however,it cannot overcome the tragedy of the Commons because it restricted by the logic of capital,it is environmental injustice because of the strategy of environment pollution transfer meanwhile;on the other hand,Xi Jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought not only provides ontological,axiological and methodological basis for overcoming ecological and environmental problems in philosophy,but also creates a new modernization mode of harmonious coexistence between human and nature in practice,which is different from the western classical modernization and ecological modernization in the terms of adopting a brand-new strategy to avoid repeating the western "tragedy of the Commons" and repeating the "treatment after pollution" mode,to strengthen the global consciousness and to build a human destiny community.Finally,this paper summarizes the theoretical and practical significance of Xi Jinping's Ecological Civilization Thought and its reference value for the ecological civilization construction in developing countries.
