The carbon fiber composite material is structural material composed by combination of carbon fiber with a matrix material such as a resin,a metal, and a ceramic. As an emerging non-metallic material,it has broad application prospects.First,it is widely applied in aviation, aerospace and other military fiel ds.With continuously deep exploration of applications in the military field, relevant manufacturing and application technologies turns more and more mature, which has led to great development in the application of carbon fiber composite materials in the civilian field. The main applications lay in mechanical electronics, building materials, sports, chemical, medical and other areas.Meanwhile,it is rapidly superseding the traditional metal materials and chosen as the preferred structural material. In this paper,by analyzing the development of drilling technology of CFRP composite materials, the performance of drilling small holes is studied.Firstly, twist drill is applied to drill a 1.5mm diameter hole in CFRP composite material.By comparing the experimental methods,a contrast group with or without backing is set up to explore the influence of peeling layer on the drilling performance of composite material.Secondly, through orthogonal experiment, different cutting tools and drilling process parameters are utilized, and MINITAB software is applied to analyze the influence of multi-factors on the experimental results of tool life, axial force and hole diameter, the impact of cutting tool geometric and process parameters on the drilling performance of composite materials is studied, thus the main effect on various aspects can be discovered. Finally, the impact of fiber orientation and processing parameters on tool life, axial force, torque and other performances are explored by designing full-factor experiments including four factors,namely,hot-pressing tank type,pre-immersion type, feed speed and bit type.Based on the above analysis in the effect of cutting speed, feeding speed, cutter type, cutter geometry size and prepreg form on the drilling performance, this paper provides optimum operating conditions for CFRP composite drilling.
